OUR TEAM

kRIS.jpg

kris latham - owner

Kris’s amazing childhood enabled her to be exposed to animals from an early age, living in Africa, South America, USA and from coast to coast in Canada. She was always surrounded by animals and even managed to bring some of them home. Her first horse was rescued in Newfoundland at the age of 12!

With a Diploma from Guelph University in Horticulture Design, Environmental Resource Studies at Trent University and a Master Organic Gardener Seal she combined her love of the outdoors and nature to start her own landscaping business, in 1998. She retired the Landscape business after 25yrs in 2023 to focus on the Ranch activities and the Equines in her care.

Her love of animals is endless and in 2016 Second Chance Cheekye Ranch was born. She manages all aspects of the non-profit organization along with dedicated board members and amazing volunteers.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHEEKYE

First Years

Over 100 years ago, the location of Cheekye Ranch was the start of the famous Pemberton Trail. Early in the 1900`s Squamish opened to tourism from Vancouver to as far away as New York. Sportsman and vacationers arriving by steamboat made the trek to Cheekye by horseback or stage-coach and eventually the Cheakamus stage-coach named “Rapid” in 1910 driven by Harry Judd.

Cheakamus House “James Road House”

The folks would come here to hunt and fish the Cheakamus and surrounding rivers. This area was best known in BC for its abundance of Steelhead, Salmon and Trout. The hunting wasn’t that bad either.

Cheekye Lodge  and Cheakamus House

The Cheekye Lodge is still standing today and the owners of Fergie’s make it their home. The Cheakamus House wasn’t so lucky and was destroyed and swept away by a massive flood in 1920.

Later Cheekye became a passenger station on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. It was home to a fishing lodge, cabins, a small store, a logging camp, and a post office from October 16, 1924 to August 8, 1931.
